2009-10 Endowed Scholarship Winners Announced
We are pleased to introduce the 2009-10 MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Endowed Scholars for 2009-2010. The stipend provided to the award recipients is made possible from the revenues raised each year by the Spartan Crystal Ball, which have now accrued to over $60,000 in an endowed fund held by MSU. Students competing for this scholarship must be from the Tri-county area. In addition to submitting a personal statement, they must demonstrate financial need, a record of campus or community volunteerism and a superior academic record of success.
Tasneem Pierce & Kayla Rodgers
Tasneem Pierce is an MSU Junior, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in her major of Family Community Services in the Department of Family and Child Ecology. She has served as a research associate at the Child Development Laboratory (Family and Child Ecology) and a technician and Research Intern in the Genomics and Evolutionary Development laboratory (College of Engineering).
Kayla Rodgers is a second year Nutritional Science major with pre-med tracking. Kayla, who is the first person in her family to graduate from high school and attend college, is planning to pursue medical school with a specialty in OB/GYN. Her goal is to become a globally recognized expert in women’s health issues. Kayla maintained a 4.0 GPA during her first year while working two jobs and volunteering as a tutor at local schools. Having overcome significant obstacles in her youth, Kayla’s essay concluded with the following: “I want to better myself and the world around me in every way I can, and set out a better life for my family.”

Mid-Michigan Alumni Club Donates $36,000 to MSU Related Programs
The Board of Directors of the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan annually provides “Mini-Grants” to campus-based organizations that support MSU students and MSU-sponsored programs for youth in the tri-county area. Given the state of Michigan’s economy, this year’s grants focused on multicultural programs addressed to meet basic human needs. Additional grants will be awarded to five non-revenue athletic teams. The total allocated for these Mini-Grants is $8,000.
Mini-Grants for 2009 will be awarded in April to the following cross-cultural organizations:
• Red Cross of Mid-Michigan Food Bank - $1,000
• Wharton Center Seats for Kids - $750
• MSU Gifted & Talented Shiga, Japan subsidy for high school students - $350
• MSU Community Music School - $850
• MSU International Volunteer Action Corps - $800

• Women’s Golf - $650
• Swimming & Diving - $350
• Field Hockey - $350
• Gymnastics - $500
In addition to these Mini-Grants, other donations from the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan have included:
• Textbook scholarships of $750 each to seven recipients from the tri-county area
• Two Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Awards of $2,000 each
• Two Scholarships of $900 each from the Club’s endowed scholarship fund for Fall 2009 & Winter 2010 Semesters (Spartan Crystal Ball proceeds)
• $8,350 for Steve Smith’s Detroit Pershing Scholarship fund for MSU students (golf outing)
• $8,350 for the Building Brighter Futures Children’s Fund (golf outing)
• The Student Alumni Foundation received $250 in programmatic support
The total contributed in 2009 to support faculty, scholarships and students (and their families) is $36,000. Much of this money is raised through fundraising and the balance is budgeted from the membership proceeds shared by the MSU national Alumni Association—your membership dollars at work. Please keep this in mind when you are next approached to participate in a Club-sponsored event or to sign up for a national MSU Alumni Association membership.
