9th Annual Steve Smith Charity Challenge Golf Outing at the Spectacular Country Club of Lansing

The 9th Annual Steve Smith Charity Challenge was held on June 23, 2008, at the beautiful Country Club of Lansing. The four-person scramble is the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan’s single biggest fundraiser. More details regarding the success of the event will be available soon.

To date the event has generated over $200,000! This year your MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Board of Directors has selected the Building Brighter Futures Children’s Fund (“BBFCF”) as the local charity. The BBFCF benefits three very important local charities: Boys & Girls Club of Lansing; Ele’s Place; and St. Vincent Catholic Charities - St. Vincent Home for Children.

Former Michigan State All-American Steve Smith announced his NBA retirement at MSU’s Clara Bell Smith Student- Athlete Academic Center, which opened in 1998 following a $2.5 million donation from Smith. The gift remains the largest gift ever by a professional athlete to any college or university. A native of Detroit, Smith scored 13,430 points in 14 NBA seasons, averaging 14.3 points per game. An NBA All-Star in 1998, Smith won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1998, and the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2002. In 2003, Smith earned an NBA Championship ring with the Spurs.

A two-time All-American at MSU, Smith finished his career as the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer with 2,263 points. He currently ranks second. As a junior, Smith was the recipient of the Chicago Tribune Silver Basketball Award, presented to the Big Ten MVP, after averaging 20.2 points and 7.0 rebounds for a Spartan squad that finished 28-6 and won the Big Ten Championship in 2001. Smith was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame, which is housed at the Smith Center.

The 8th Annual Steve Smith Charity Challenge a Huge Success
The 8th Annual Steve Smith Charity Challegne was held on June 25, on a beautiful sunny day at the Country Club of Lansing. This year's event raised nearly $28,000 for the Building Brighter Futures Children Fund, Steve Smith's MSU/Pershing High School Academic Scholarship Fund, and the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan.

Present at the event were Steve Smith, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, Men's Head Basketball Coach Tom Izzo, Men's Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio, Women's Head Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant, Women's Head Golf Coach Stacy-Slobodnik-Stoll, among others.

In Steve's case the eighth time was the charm, as his team took home first place honors. After winning the event, Steve was heard whispering "a little help from two players from the MSU Women's golf team never hurt anyone!"

Thank you again to all of our sponsors, donors, golfers and volunteers. A special thank you to this year's Champion Sponsors, Dean Trailways of Michigan, and Kahl, Kahl, and Caltrider Investment Consulting Group of Wachovia Securities, and to this year's Golf Committee members: Jeff Hicks, Chair, Rhonda Abood, Laurie Baumer, John Black, Nathan Clark, Sue Hansen, Sandra Kowalk, Dominic Migaldi, Steve Peckham, Micki Pasteur, Sherri Solomon, John Suckow and Carmen Turner.
